Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Plant a Pollinator Project deemed a success.

Last year, during Mental Health Week, over 400 green-fingered residents, businesses and schools received FREE Plant a Pollinator packs from Caerphilly CBC to help them connect with nature by growing their own wildflower patch.

The packs included native wild-flower seeds, a sowing and aftercare guidance sheet, pollinator identification sheets and a local record centre recording sheet.

Recent years have seen a worrying decline in pollinator numbers with some species declining by a quarter. The loss of suitable habitats has meant that pollinators have found it hard to find food, water and shelter. One way gardeners can help halt this decline is by planting garden flowers that provide forage for a wide variety of pollinating insects.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green Spaces said, "Not only do the wildflowers brighten up our local communities, they are providing vital food sources for our wild pollinators including bumblebees, solitary bees, wasps, hoverflies, butterflies and moths.

"The pollinator packs enabled residents, schools and businesses to plant nectar rich wildflowers, giving nature a much needed helping hand and creating new habitats for other wildlife in Caerphilly County Borough."

If you took part in the Plant a Pollinator Project please email photos of your wildflowers to countryside@caerphilly.gov.uk . We’d love to see them.
