Deri Primary School win first place at Welsh Heritage Schools initiative competition
Deri Primary School were awarded 1st prize in The Catherine and Daniel Phillips Memorial Prize Hodge Foundation at this year’s Welsh Heritage Schools initiative competition.

Along with their 1st place certificate, the pupils were awarded £250 for their project highlighting the history of their local Ysgwyddgwyn Chapel in Deri which closed at the end of last year.

The pupils in the History club were supported by Years 4, 5 & 6 in researching the history of Ysgwyddgwyn and discussing the impact that places of worship have on local communities. Children looked at the building itself and how it is a prominent part of the skyline of Deri. This led the History club to research Welsh landscape artist, Martyn Evans, who has depicted landscapes that reminded them of Deri. Pupils took inspiration from Martyn Evans and created their own art for the project.

Miss Bourne, who runs the school’s History club commented, “I am so proud of all the hard work the children put in to making this project so successful. Ysgwyddgwyn was an important part of the community here in Deri and the children loved learning all about its history. The pupils worked hard as a team and thoroughly deserved their award”.

Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education added, “Congratulations to all involved at Deri Primary School for this fantastic achievement. A first place prize is testimony to the hard work and passion that the pupils have displayed and everyone should be very proud of their success.”
