A new chapter for Deri Library
Posted on : 23 Mar 2022
Library staff from Caerphilly County Borough have been working hard to transform a section of the local community centre into a make-shift library after storm Eunice damaged a much-loved library.
Storm Eunice, which resulted in a red weather warning in areas of the Caerphilly County Borough, caused significant damage to Deri Library, but that has not stopped the staff from providing the valued service at a joint location.
Library services including library staff presence, a small selection of browsing book stock, library stock requests, returns and collections and photocopying will be available at Deri Community Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9.30am-1.00 and 2.00pm-6.00pm.
The Community Centre Main Hall will also soon be utilised to ensure sessions such as Rhyme and Toddler Times and Police Surgeries can all continue.
Councillor Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning & Leisure said: “Although one of our smaller libraries, Deri Library is one of our most visited and loved. We are very happy to be able to continue offering library services to our regular customers and members of the public despite the damage caused. I am very proud of the staff and all that they continue to do to provide first class service to our residents, they truly embody the Team Caerphilly ethos.”
Judith Jones, Deri Library user said: “I don’t live in Deri any more but still make the visit down the library every week. For us, the library is about more than just the books, it’s somewhere to come, spend time and see friends.”
Julie Thomas, Senior Library Assistant at Deri Library said: “We are all very proud of what we have been able to achieve here at Deri Community Centre. Whilst we aren’t able to provide all of the services that the library offers, we’re certainly making the best use of the space and facilities that we have available to us. A big thank you to the Community Centre Regeneration Committee for being so helpful and welcoming.”
