Caerphilly County Borough’s second £500 winner announced
Posted on : 16 May 2022
The second winner of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Mash for Cash campaign has been announced.
Alan Matthews from Pontlottyn has been announced as the second winner of Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.
The Mash for Cash campaign was launched in March 2022 in line with Food Waste Action Week with an aim to increase the number of residents currently recycling their food waste.
The campaign will see houses monitored with one food recycling participant chosen at random each month, with each winner receiving £500.
Current food waste recycling participation levels in the borough are around 40%.
The Local Authority hopes that the campaign will increase in food waste recycling, leading to a decline in the amounts of refuse disposal, boosting the overall recycling rates as well as supporting the Councils commitment to reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and thereby contributing to the national and global goals for decarbonisation.
Mr Matthews said: “I’ve been recycling my food waste for around 10 years. I hadn’t heard about the Mash for Cash campaign so it was definitely a pleasant surprise to be told I had won.”
Mark Williams, Corporate Director for Economy and Environment for Caerphilly County Borough Council explains: “A big congratulations to Alan Matthews, it is great to see another happy winner.
“With the current rise in energy bills, we are very excited to be able to redistribute public funding back into the community in this way with the hope of increasing our current levels of food waste recycling at the same time.”
The Mash for Cash winners will continue to be announced every month throughout 2022.
