Popular Community Bistro relaunched at Ty’n y Wern Primary School
The popular Community Bistro has relaunched at Ty’n y Wern Primary today with The Mayor of Caerphilly Council, Cllr Elizabeth Aldworth, at the heart of the reopening.

Pre-pandemic, the Ty’n y Wern Bistro was run every Wednesday by pupils on a weekly rotation, pupils would undertake tasks such as baking, cleaning, handling money and chatting to customers. Youngsters would then be able to put their learnt numeracy, literacy and science skills into practise in a ‘real-life’ setting.

The relaunch of the cafe on the school campus will be open for members of the public to have a catch-up, a coffee, and a cake. The Bistro will be open for refreshments every Wednesday from 1:30pm-3:30pm with disabled access and baby changing facilities.

Staff and pupils are also in the process of creating a ‘Cosy Corner’ which in essence, will be a warm bank where our school community will have access to dressing up costumes, a recycling rail and a small food bank.

Caroline ap Hywel, Senior Leader, who was involved in launching the project said, “We are excited for the relaunch of our Community Bistro which was going from strength to strength before Covid hit. We recognise how important it is to get people back together and want the Bistro to be at the heart of our community.

“We also plan to us the space as a 'warm bank' each morning with free tea and toast, comfy seating and public wifi. Adult Learning Wales will be providing classes for parents and community members with sugarcraft and food safety starting on a Friday in the near future.”

Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education commented, “It’s wonderful to see the relaunch of this fantastic Community Bistro where children can use it as a space to enjoy themselves, integrate and mix with locals from the community.”
