Walking is the cheapest and easiest way to get out and explore our beautiful countryside; no special equipment needed, no training required. Being out in the fresh air on your own, with your dog, or with family and friends is nature's own tonic. Don't just take our word for it - "walking is a man's best medicine!" as Hippocrates said over 2,000 years ago.

All our green spaces are ideal places to take a walk. They each offer something different - different routes, different terrain, different habitats. In Caerphilly county borough you're never far from a bit of peace and tranquillity, a place to unwind from the pressures of daily life and somewhere to recharge your batteries. Each of our country park pages has a section on the various walks and trails within each park that will get you started.

Walking Trails

With a rich natural heritage in the county borough we have developed and published several walk guides to help you explore and discover it. These longer routes and trails, ranging from 3 miles to 32, often start and finish from our parks and will take you out into the wider countryside away from our green spaces. The Walking Trails page has more information on all these routes including downloadable leaflets.

Healthy Walking

Walking has proven health benefits. If you are looking to get a bit healthier and fitter and want to use walking as way to do so visit our Healthy Walking page. Find out how walking can benefit your health with details of some specially developed routes for healthy walking.

Would you would like a bit of help and encouragement to get that little bit healthier and fitter? There are several local walking groups that meet regularly for a short healthy walk around our green spaces. They are always keen to welcome new members.

Public Rights of Way

Not all the paths and tracks that crisscross the countryside have been designated as a named trail or walk. There are still hundreds of miles of paths with the country borough that you can walk and sometimes cycle or ride a horse on. Our Public Rights of Way page will help to step out in the right direction as you plan and plot your own walks.

Open Access Land

Nearly 6,000 hectares of Caerphilly county borough has been designated as "open access land". That's 6,000 hectares of open country, commons and woodlands that you have a right to roam on. This right to roam is on foot only but it has opened up large areas of the countryside for informal recreation. There's more information on the Open Access Land page.
