Join the library

NOTICE: Our library buildings are currently closed to the public. If you would like to join the library service please see the option below to join online through our Smartcard website. Then please email us at  libadmin@caerphilly.gov.uk providing your name and contact number. A library member of staff will then contact you to complete the application.

To join the library you need to apply for a Smartcard. This is one card that provides quick and easy access to facilities at your local leisure centre and local library.

How to apply

You can apply for membership

  • in person at any library
  • in person at any leisure centre
  • online through our Smartcard website

If you apply online, you will be given a temporary reference number until your first visit to either your local library or leisure centre to complete the application process and show us your proof of identity.

Your Smart Card gives you access to library and leisure services in Caerphilly and must be presented each time you use one of our facilities.

Your card also enables you to access our online resources. To enable this function, you will need to know your 4 digit PIN number linked to your library account. To find out more, please ask a member of staff.

Proving your identity

Before we can post you your Smartcard you will need to show two forms of identification with your name and address on it, such as:

  • Driving licence
  • Utility bill
  • Benefit book
  • Bank/Credit card statement

You will also need to show one form of identification that has your signature on it, such as:

  • Driving licence
  • Benefit card
  • Passport
  • Credit/debit card

If you are under 16 your parent or carer will need to show one form of identification and sign the application form.  Babies can join the library from birth - all we need is a parent or carer's proof of identity.

Non-residents

If you are visiting the area on a holiday or just passing through, you can join for three months as a visitor.

Lost cards

If you lose your library card, you should let your local library know as soon as possible. We will cancel your card to prevent anyone else from using it.

A fee of £2 will be charged for replacing lost or stolen cards and for changing either the name or photograph. You will have to attend in person at your local library for changes/replacements to be made.
