Gateways
You’ll know when you’re going into our woods because you’ll have to pass through one of our gateways.
Rubin Eynon
Artist, Rubin Eynon, was commissioned to design and make twelve entrances into the woods. He was asked to use local building materials to create the gateways. He chose:
- Welsh oak- these trees grow well here and the timber is strong and hardwearing.
- Pennant sandstone - our local rock. Again tough and durable with lovely shades of blue, green and orange.
- Iron - its what we’re famous for here in South Wales (along with coal and rugby of course). The industrial revolution that created Britain’s Empire was fuelled by coal and iron from the South Wales valleys.
