Caerphilly housing partnership wins national award
A project developed and delivered by Caerphilly County Borough Council, United Welsh, Platfform and Llamau has won the ‘Working in Partnership’ category at this year’s Welsh Housing Awards.
 
Hosted by the Chartered Institute of Housing in Wales (CIH Cymru), the annual awards celebrate achievements and innovation across the housing sector in Wales and the impact they have on the lives of so many.
 
The Caerphilly partnership won for its STAR housing model; this uses starter, transitional and resettlement (STAR) flats as a route for rehousing individuals leaving temporary accommodation who require lessening levels of support but aren’t quite ready for independent living.
 
This partnership between Caerphilly Council’s Supporting People Team, United Welsh, Platfform and Llamau has meant that individuals coming from supported accommodation are provided with a long-term home that is suitable for them, allowing for an easier transition and helping them settle more quickly.
 
Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “The STAR model helps individuals settle into long-term homes, by providing a wide range of support to assist them in becoming more independent and able to sustain their tenancy.
 
“I’d like to congratulate and thank everyone involved in delivering this vital project and on winning this prestigious award.”
 
Craig Singler, Director of Housing Services at United Welsh said: “We are thrilled that the STAR project was recognised at this year’s Welsh housing awards.

“We have committed to allocating a STAR flat at each of our new housing developments in Caerphilly. We also consider whether our existing properties are suitable to join the STAR project as they become available to relet, so we can help more people in temporary need of support to settle long-term in a new home.

“The STAR project’s success is a testament to the partnership between our organisations.”
