Fochriw Primary School were Triple Award Winners at the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative competition

Fochriw Primary School were Triple Award Winners at the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative competition
Fochriw Primary School managed to secure three awards at the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative competition.

The William Menelaus Prize for best project on industrial heritage was received with an award of £500. In addition to this the Moondance Foundation celebrated the school’s historical detectives with £600. A further third award, in recognition of the school’s efforts, was from the Books Council of Wales with a visit from an author.

Pupils in Year 3 and 4 in Dosbarth Merthyr Town carried out an enquiry based approach to discover more about the ‘lost’ village of Penybanc in the Darran Valley. The school worked in partnership with Caerphilly Library Service who supported with a wide range of information and evidence helping bring their studies to life.

The judges praised how ‘The topic saw the pupils develop their knowledge and real sense of pride in their community. They gained an excellent understanding of the Darran Valley. The sense of discovery and enthusiasm was evident throughout. The judges were impressed by the dedication of the pupils in their historical enquiries and ambition to share what they had learned.’

Mrs. Pascoe Head Teacher commented, “To receive recognition for our efforts at Fochriw Primary School in this initiative that celebrates Welsh heritage for schools across the whole of Wales is fantastic. It’s important to our school and wider community that our pupils have a knowledge and understanding of their Welsh heritage. They’ve loved exploring and learning about the past using this creative, innovative approach. We’re humbled and proud to be triple award winners!”

Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education added, “What a fabulous achievement for Fochriw Primary School. Congratulations to all involved, it’s wonderful to see pupils taking an interest in their Welsh heritage and culture.”
