Cabinet Approves Updated Plans for Caerphilly Interchange Project

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has recently approved plans to further progress the Caerphilly Interchange Project. The cabinet report outlined that £520,000 from the Regeneration Project Board Development Reserve, can be used for the delivery of RIBA Stage 4 for the Caerphilly Interchange proposal. The cabinet also approved a further allocation of up to £580,000 from the Council’s Placeshaping Earmarked Reserve to cover the shortfall in funding in the event that further external funding cannot be identified.

The approved proposals will now allow the council to maximise their chances of securing the necessary funding for the delivery of the interchange.

The completion of RIBA Stage 3 is expected by September 2023, marking a significant milestone in the project's development. However, additional funding is required to proceed with RIBA Stage 4, which involves developing detailed designs for the project. This phase is crucial as it prepares the project to be "shovel ready," meaning it will be ready to move into the construction phase once funding is secured.

Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Prosperity, Regeneration and Climate Change commented:

“I am delighted that cabinet has agreed to further progress plans to bring a new transport interchange to the heart of the county borough. Major infrastructure projects have much more chance of attracting external funding when we invest in the preparatory work.

“These recommendations, to make the proposal ‘shovel ready’ shows the commitment that we have to make sure that this essential project is delivered.

“This project is a vital component to the council’s long-term vision for the county borough, and serves as an addition to the broader Caerphilly 2035 Placemaking plan. Alongside other key initiatives such as the Ffos Caerffili market and the development of Pentrebane Street – this is yet another milestone reached.”

The council's recommendations for funding allocation were made to ensure the Caerphilly Interchange project remains on track. By having a "shovel ready" scheme in place, the project will serve as the gateway for the Caerphilly 2035 placemaking initiative, enhancing the region's infrastructure and increasing the chances of securing the necessary funding for its successful delivery.
