Caerphilly Council’s commitment to reviewing No Mow May
Caerphilly’s Leader, Cllr. Sean Morgan, has said that lessons have been learned from Caerphilly’s  rollout of the UK wide ‘No Mow May’ campaign and has committed to a review, in order to strike the right balance.

Cllr. Sean Morgan said, “After reviewing complaints and compliments and through looking at social media posts, it is very clear that there is an appetite amongst residents to support bio diversity and the clear environmental benefits, but it is also clear that we haven’t struck the right balance and we will need ensure that certain areas remain maintained, even through ‘No Mow May’. If we are to make a success of this, we need to bring residents with us.”

The formal decision was taken in March to support the campaign and outlined proposals to pause formal grass cutting during the month of May, with the exception of visibility splays and sight lines on highways, margins and access on footways / cycle routes, sports grounds, urban areas such as housing estates, municipal parks, older persons’ accommodation, cemeteries, and play / open recreation spaces, which will continue to be maintained at the current cutting frequencies.

Caerphilly’s Cabinet have committed to reviewing the proposals to consider the areas that are required to be maintained, with a particular focus on the areas of high community use.

Cllr. Chris Morgan, the Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Green Spaces, said, “It is important to support our residents who enjoy our green spaces, and encourage the biodiversity in our county.  To do that well, we will work to understand how that balance can be achieved before next spring and we will also have to iron out a few unforeseen issues. We have, unfortunately, suffered a number of mechanical issues recently due to the cutting regime changes, and we now understand that we need the correct machinery in place to deal with extra-long grass. It is a learning curve.
