Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash initiative continues
Another Caerphilly County Borough resident has been rewarded £500 for recycling their food waste as part of the Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

Mr and Mrs Jenkins from Caerphilly have been announced as the latest winners of Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

The campaign sees houses monitored with one food recycling participant chosen at random each month to win £500.

The initiative was launched in March 2022, with an aim to increase food waste recycling participation and contribute to Welsh Government’s decarbonisation targets.

All Caerphilly County Borough residents are eligible to win the cash prize providing they put their food waste recycling caddy out for collection.

Caerphilly County Borough Council currently offer a weekly food waste collection service to all 80,000 households, where the food waste is taken for a process called Anaerobic Digestion, which where it is turned into a source of renewable energy.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green spaces said: “Caerphilly Council are currently exploring ways to boost our recycling rates, to ensure that we meet the current target of 70%, set by Welsh Government.

“Caerphilly County Borough Council currently stands at number 3 in the national league table for recyclable materials collected at kerbside each week. However, our overall recycling performance figures are affected by the relatively low levels of organic waste recycled. In particular, the weekly food waste collection service, where participation levels are low.

“We are therefore very happy to announce the continuation of our Mash for Cash campaign, an initiative that we hope will increase food waste recycling participation and boost recycling figures.  Thanks to all those residents who are already participating in this weekly collection service and encourage you all to get involved and have the chance to win the next cash prize.”
