Successful local business, Optrain Ltd, continue to expand within the construction industry
Posted on : 22 Jun 2023
Optrain Ltd is a local business that was established in 2004, offering training to the construction industry. They incorporate digital learning through a combination of worksite conditions with realistic controls, enabling hands-on learning, and enhancing traditional operator programmes. The business is based in Rhymney but also has a test centre at Baverstocks Junction, Llwydcoed.
Optrain have gained accreditation and Test Centre status with Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS), National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS). They provide training for certifications such as Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), and work with institutions such as The College Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff University and have gotten people employed to work on the A465 Heads of the Valleys roadworks.
Optrain have also done TV work on shows such as Sky 1’s Safebreakers with Ben Shephard and BBC’s Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience. They also have 2 simulators, providing scope for more environmentally friendly training by saving costs on fuel and cutting emissions. They use the simulators to train before moving on to actual machines, and to work with children with special needs.
The local business needed new machinery as the existing machines they had were not tier 5, therefore they did not meet the criteria for training. Optrain Ltd received a UKSPF-funded Business Development grant in 2022-23 for two dumper trucks. This helped them reduce their outgoings as they were previously using rentals. They then received a UKSPF-funded Business Development grant in 2023-24 for two forward-facing dumper trucks. These match-funded grants from the UK Government were dedicated towards Optrain through Caerphilly County Borough Council’s intervention of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. These grants have helped safeguard two jobs.
Going forward, Optrain plans to continue growing the company with their new machines, with potential to look at expanding throughout Caerphilly County Borough. They would also like to get more involved in helping children with special needs.
Wayne Davies, owner of Optrain Ltd, commented “The match-funded grants have been a game changer for us. With the Business Enterprise Renewal Team, nothing was too much trouble. They were very helpful and, on the case, straight away.”
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, Regeneration & Climate Change, said "Great to see the business go from strength the strength. Optrain Ltd have been trading since 2004 and provide training to the Construction Industry based in Rhymney. Excellent to hear about their plans for the future and how our support will help."
