Veterans, Service Leavers, and their families: Introducing Your SKILLS, Your FUTURE – A Two-Day Programme for veterans, service leavers and their families considering a new career in the Civil Service.

Glynne Jones CBE, Head of Place for Wales was delighted to announce this week the launch of an exciting initiative aimed at reaching out to local veterans, service leavers, and their families to explain career opportunities within the Civil Service in Wales.

This ground-breaking event was to introduce the strategically designed programme aimed and supporting veterans, service leaders and their families to explore the work undertaken by the civil service and the wider public sector.

It was founded and led by Kim Ann Williamson MBE, Strategic Advisor to Heads of Place in Wales who was supported by a variety of Civil Service Departments, Caerphilly County Borough Council and University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The two-day programme was a comprehensive face-to-face event in partnership with Civil Service departments in Wales and the Caerphilly County Borough Council Regional Armed Forces Covenant Liaison Officer on 5th and 6th June 2023.

This programme offers an invaluable opportunity to gain insights into various career opportunities and to be provided with practical support to help equip them when applying for a new role.

Kim Ann said, “This was a great opportunity and privilege to work alongside like-minded colleagues across the Civil Service and wider public sector in Wales to roll out this much needed programme to support our armed forces community to understand the different roles that are available.”

Colonel James Phillips, Veterans' Commissioner for Wales, was in attendance for the 2-day programme. He commented “Such a valuable initiative to any service leaver, veteran or family member considering a role with the civil service. Thank you, Kim Ann, for your drive and enthusiasm in pulling this together, and your team for delivering it.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Armed Forces Community Covenant Champion, Teresa Heron, commented “It is great to see that there is a programme in place to support and show veterans, service leavers, and families that there are opportunities for those to take the next step in starting a new career within the civil service. Thank you to all involved in making this possible.”

Your SKILLS, Your FUTURE reflects the Heads of Place Wales commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all. Veterans, service leavers, and their families bring a wealth of experience, leadership qualities, and dedication to public service, making them valuable assets within the Civil Service.
