Plans unveiled for shared ‘super school’ campus and community facility

A new state of the art, shared primary school campus could be built in Rhymney as part of exciting plans unveiled by Caerphilly county borough council this week.

Proposals have been announced to create a modern, sustainable new school building boasting shared facilities to accommodate Ysgol Y Lawnt, Upper Rhymney Primary School and for wider community use.

The two schools will continue to provide both Welsh and English Medium Primary education and remain as separate entities, situated within a new dual-purpose building.

The council’s Education Committee will consider progressing the plans at a meeting next week (Tuesday 20th June).

Cllr Carol Andrews, CCBC Cabinet Member for Education said, “This proposal is the next exciting chapter in our ambitious ‘Sustainable Communities for Learning’ programme, which has already delivered significant benefits across the county borough. I’m sure residents in the Upper Rhymney Valley will welcome these bold proposals to provide a modern, fit for purpose learning environment for young people and wider community use in future.”

The new school would be designed to maximise local infrastructure, sustainability and energy efficiencies and meeting the Welsh Government Net Zero Carbon School requirements.

The scheme forms part of the next phase of the council’s ‘Sustainable Communities for Learning’ Band B programme, which has already delivered a number of successful school improvement schemes across the county borough.

Members of the committee will be asked to agree to proceed to Outline Business Case stage with Welsh Government and progress the scheme to the next step.
