Most roads across Wales that are currently 30mph will be reduced to 20mph later this year as part of new legislation being introduced by  Welsh Government.

The move aims to reduce road injuries, offer a safer environment to encourage cycling or walking, as well as lower noise pollution.

Councils across Wales have been asked to identify certain roads within their areas that may retain the existing 30mph speed limit. These roads will then be exceptions to the Welsh Government 20mph scheme. View the 30mph Exceptions list.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is looking to gather feedback for the roads that are being proposed as exceptions. An online consultation is currently underway, and you are invited to give your views on the 30mph Exceptions list our website.

Deputy Minister for Climate Change, with responsibility for transport, Lee Waters said: “The evidence from around the world is very clear – reducing speed limits reduces collisions and saves lives. Slower speeds also help create a safer and more welcoming community, giving people the confidence to walk and cycle more, improving their health and wellbeing whilst protecting the environment.”

Councillor Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Welsh Government has announced the intention that a 20mph speed restriction will be introduced on residential and busy pedestrian streets, and roads where streetlights are placed no more than 200 yards apart. Of course, the principle of reducing the number of accidents on the roads and encouraging more walking and cycling is to be welcomed.

“But to ensure that the changes are introduced in the most sensible way locally, we want to hear your views about what is being proposed for the road network in Caerphilly County Borough.“

The public consultation is open for three weeks, closing on 16 June 2023.
