Caerphilly resident turns their food waste into £500 cash!

A Caerphilly County Borough resident has won £500 for recycling their food waste as part of the Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

Ms Howells from Ystrad Mynach has been announced as the seventh winner of Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.

The Mash for Cash campaign was launched in March 2022 in line with Food Waste Action Week with an aim to increase the number of residents currently recycling their food waste.

The campaign sees houses monitored with one food recycling participant chosen at random each month, with each winner receiving £500.

The Local Authority hopes that the campaign will increase in food waste recycling participation, whilst the prize money could help residents during the current cost of living crisis.

Ms Howells said: “I am from the ‘make do and mend’ generation so try to waste as little as possible. I have recycled my food waste since receiving a food waste caddy from CCBC, and before that I composted it myself, so am very surprised to be acknowledged for my contribution in this way.”

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green spaces added: “A big thank you to Ms Howells for her contribution to our food waste recycling agenda and congratulations on their winnings.
“With the cost of living crisis on everyone’s mind we are so please to see another happy winner of our Mash for Cash campaign, and to be able to redistribute public funding back into the community in this way.”

The Mash for Cash winners will continue to be announced every month throughout 2022.
