20mph speed limit starts Sunday 17 September

From 17 September 2023, the default speed limit in built-up areas in Wales will reduce from 30mph to 20mph. This includes roads where streetlights are placed no more than 200 yards apart.
The Welsh Government has introduced the legislative changes to make roads safer, reduce road collisions, encourage more people to walk and cycle and to safeguard the environment for future generations.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has been getting things ready on our roads to make sure that everything is clear when you are driving in the county borough.
30mph markings on the roads have been removed or painted over in the run up to the launch date this week and speed limit road signage has also been removed. This includes 20mph zones signs outside schools because these roads will be subject to the default 20mph limit from 17 September with all costs being met by Welsh Government.
New 20mph signs have been installed and will be uncovered when the default 20mph speed limit comes into force.
While most default 30mph roads will automatically reduce to 20mph, the council has identified a number of routes which will remain at 30mph. You can see the list of 30mph exceptions on our website.
The Police and GoSafe will continue to enforce 20mph, like any other speed limit, to make our roads safer for all users. They will also be helping to engage with and educate motorists to ensure that the new speed limits are respected, and driver behaviour change is supported.
