Caerphilly’s Play in the Park Summer Programme Sees Resounding Success
The Play in the Park summer programme has been hailed a success, with events running from 1st August at Welfare Park, Senghenydd, and concluding on 27th August at Blackwood Showfield. Despite the unpredictable British summer weather, only one out of the eight scheduled sessions had to be cancelled, allowing children and families to enjoy a summer filled with play and community spirit.
 
The series provided children and families with the opportunity to engage in low-cost or no-cost, easy-to-replicate activities within local green spaces throughout the Caerphilly County Borough. These sessions, delivered by Caerphilly Early Years and Childcare Service alongside Caerphilly Play Service, offered accessible fun while encouraging families to enjoy and make use of their local environments.
 
One of the standout events of the programme was held at Morgan Jones Park on National Play Day, 7th August. This event drew a lively crowd, creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated the importance of play in children’s lives. Families from across the borough came together to participate in a wide range of activities, from outdoor games to creative arts and crafts, making the day a true highlight of the summer.
 
The series was launched with the session at Senghenydd, following collaboration with local councillors, community members, and Menter Iaith Sir Caerffili. This event had a specific focus on Welsh language promotion and celebration, acknowledging and positively impacting the linguistic significance within the Aber Valley. 
 
In total, over a thousand children attended the Play in the Park sessions, each receiving a free healthy packed lunch. In addition, around 200 children participated in the pop-up and play sessions held across various locations in the borough, offering even more opportunities for local play.
 
Alongside the Play in the Park sessions, Caerphilly Play also offered support to local communities by providing £250 grants to individuals and organisations who wished to host their own events in celebration of National Play Day. This initiative allowed various unique events to take place across the borough, further fostering community engagement and encouraging active play among children.  
 
Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, remarked, “This summer’s Play in the Park programme has been a fantastic success, bringing together families from across the borough to celebrate the joy of play. The turnout at Morgan Jones Park on National Play Day was particularly impressive, and we’re thrilled that so many children had the opportunity to participate in these free, fun-filled events.”
 
The success of this year’s programme highlights the value of community-led initiatives in creating safe, inclusive spaces for children to play and learn.
