Household asbestos removal and disposal

The safest option to remove and dispose of asbestos waste from your home is to use a specialist contractor. However, it is accepted that either due to economical or operational reasons you may choose to remove it yourself.

For advice relating to the handling of asbestos waste, please contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or Natural Resource Wales.

Where to dispose of asbestos

Up to six bags/sheets of household asbestos can be disposed of at the following Household Waste Recycling Centres FREE of charge:

  • Aberbargoed, Bowen Industrial Estate
  • Penallta, Penallta Industrial Estate
  • Crosskeys, Full Moon Transfer Station
  • Trehir, Llanbradach

Please ensure that the asbestos has been double bagged in 1000 gauge polythene or double wrapped in 1000 gauge polythene and that you inform the site supervisor that the bags contain asbestos. You will then be shown which container to use.

Please note, new charges have been introduced for small vans and small trailers to dispose of household waste at any of our civic amenity sites.

Collection service

We offer a chargeable collection service for asbestos from domestic properties within the county borough.

The service includes the collection, the sealing of the sheets, and transportation to a temporary sealed storage skip prior to bulk disposal at a licensed hazardous landfill site.

Before we collect the asbestos, we will arrange for an officer to visit you, inspect the material and to provide you with a quotation. If you are happy with the quotation, you will be advised how to make the payment and arrange the collection.

Payment can be made by debit or credit card over the telephone or cash payment is accepted at any of our cash offices.

We aim to collect the asbestos within 10 working days of receiving payment.

Please note the following:

  • You will be required to leave the asbestos outside your property. We will not enter your property to collect it. When requesting the collection, you will be advised of the most suitable place to leave the asbestos depending on your property type.
  • Refunds for cancellations can only be processed if received at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled collection.
  • No concessions or exemptions are available.
